The few days leading to the equinox, my partner and I headed west to Utah and explored 3 National Parks and a State Park. My yearly visit to Canyonlands never disappoints! Utah has this power over me or maybe it’s just the desert. How healing she is with her yucca and cryptobiotic soil. Such sacred parts of our deserts; purifying, nourishing, and stable. I’ve never known such a deeply spiritual environment as a desert. Our forests are playful and young while our deserts hold a deep undeniable wisdom.

I could write a book about all the things I’ve learned from the desert, but the lesson that strikes me most is clarity through emptiness. This vast emptiness, where the horizon stretches endlessly and distractions are scarce. The mind quiets and what’s essential comes into focus. This stillness creates space for deeper truths to surface. Clarity and answers—not because the desert offers up the answers but because space is made for them to emerge.

All my previous backpacking jobs have been in Utah, from SW Zion to the NE Uinta’s. I’ve experienced Utah’s lush forests down to it’s driest and prickliest. Mountains to canyons. Scorpions to bears. I’m so grateful for Utah and it’s beauty.
